About Us: I have spent my entire life enjoying nature. Prior to my current career as a psychologist, i was an oceanographer and naturalist and working in the Arctic and the Everglades. I am an avid birder, kayaker, and sailer. My spouse, Miriam (a social justice lawyer), and i feel incredibly fortunate to be able to share Horseshoe Pond Camp with family friends and guests,---all of whom have enjoyed it for many years. It is a true "Nature Lover's Paradise." Debbie, 305-962-6151
Why we think you will enjoy staying in Duane: This area is a quiet and relatively undiscovered jewel of the Adirondacks. Often when we are paddling around the cabin or hiking at the nearby Paul Smith's Visitor's Center, an amazing local resource, we comment on the fact that there are so few people around! Please check the website at paulsmithsvic.org for special events, including: lectures, guided hikes, paddles, children's programs and concerts.
Why our property is special: See all of the above, and don't hesitate to call me if you are interested or have questions, Debbie, 305-962-6151. While we do not have TV, we do have an excellent selections of books, including books with maps and descriptions of hikes and paddles throughout the Adirondacks, multiple birding and plant books. We all have a Bose speaker that operates on blue tooth, so you can listen to all your favorite music. Mostly, we just look out the windows at the stunning views and changing light.

“I highly, highly recommend a stay at this cabin!! My time here was extremely enjoyable and restorative. Paddling on Horseshoe Pond through the rising mist as the sun beams gleamed through the pine boughs was magical each morning. The wildlife was amazing and abundant. Beavers slapping their tails or swimming across my canoes path; a Merlin playfully dive-bombing a tolerant Bald Eagle; Loons calling and diving; ducks; otters; geese Every day held a new surprise, and on clear nights, the sky was filled with stars. I did wonderful hikes up Azure Mountain to the fire tower and at Paul Smiths VIC. The accommodations are very comfortable and there is every convenience you could want. The home is filled with the spirit of two people who have a lifetime love and commitment to nature, loving relationships, and mindfulness. Treat yourself to a wonderful experience. I will definitely be returning. Sincerely, Glenn”

“This property is gorgeous! The house, and separate garage and boathouse, overlook beautiful Horseshoe Pond. They sit on a small rise above the pond, and the view is lovely through occasional tall trees. Our favorite spot is behind the house, on the lawn in an Adirondack chair or the hammock, gazing at the pond and enjoying visiting chipmunks and a woodchuck! A fire in the outdoor fire pit, or dinner on the grill and at the picnic table, makes for a great evening. Do you love to paddle? It doesn't get any better than here: walk to the canoe by the pond and off you go! Simply paddling in the pond is a delight, but you can paddle for hours to and along the Deer River Flow, where we've seen beavers, eagles and plenty of other birds. The house is charming, simple and comfortable. The owners purchased a new master queen bed this summer; both beds upstairs are very comfortable. The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped.; everything you need to cook great meals. The living room, with large picture windows facing the pond has a comfy sofa and chairs. It includes a good collection of books about the Adirondacks, to include hiking and paddling guides. There are so many gorgeous hikes and paddles in the area! The closest grocery store is a 15 minute drive to Malone; next to it is a produce market. Paul Smith's College and the associated VIC, with its many hiking and X-country skiing trails, is a 20+ minute drive. Lake Placid is close to an hour away; it offers even better shopping options and we stopped there on our way in to stock up. At stay at this cabin is an ideal spot to unwind and revel in nature. I highly recommend it!”

“I had a wonderful stay at Horseshoe Pond Camp. The house is a lovely cottage with everything you'll need for a relaxing stay. There is a large kitchen for cooking and beautiful views while eating in the dining room or outside at the picnic table. The setting is sublime: quiet and serene, overlooking a peaceful Adirondack pond. There are some Hemlock, White Cedar, and Balsam Fir trees on the property that give it a nice woodsy feel, yet the property is open enough to offer a sweeping view of the water. I didn't want to leave. The Loons serenaded me day and night. The Joe Pye Weed was blooming along the shore, and Cedar Waxwings were flitting about by the canoe launch. Some beautiful Great Herons were fishing along the shore, and a Bald Eagle circled overhead as I paddled Horseshoe Pond on my way to the Deer River Flow. There is plenty of hiking and paddling in the surrounding area.I want to return to this place again and again. There is no WIFI, but I had plenty of cellular bars so I could access internet via phone. ”

“We had a great time at the cabin. Everything was spotless and the kitchen had everything we could possibly need. The view was gorgeous as the cabin sits on the edge of a beautiful lake. The nearby areas had plenty of hikes and it is very close to Lake Placid, the site of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. It was a great way to see the Adirondacks.”

“We had a lovely stay here. The cottage has an open plan with lots of light (including picture windows overlooking the pond) and is simply but tastefully furnished. It is on a cul-de-sac near a main (rural) road; you can hear vehicles pass by if you listen, but they aren't loud (or frequent). You're literally right on the pond, which in turn connects (via a lengthy scenic passage) to the vastness of Deer River Flow. And yes, a canoe is available! One downside is that this side of the pond is too shallow and muddy for swimming, but it works well for launching the canoe, and the meadow & marsh are beautiful and full of birds, butterflies, red squirrels and the like. The kitchen has necessary equipment (nothing fancy but adequate), and there is an outdoor fireplace with some wood provided. You're a ways north of Paul Smiths and the Saranac Lake chain but close enough to drive down and spend the day. Note that the instructions provided by the owners mention grocery stores in Malone and Lake Placid, but there are also a Grand Union and a newer Aldi's in Saranac Lake. No, there are no shops or restaurants in the immediate vicinity! But there are lots of footpaths and scenic byways, and again, you can access Paul Smith's or Saranac Lake (or Lake Placid if you feel touristy) easily enough. It's a great place to spend time with your sweetheart if you both like nature, quiet, and each other's company.”

“Spent a weekend up here in the fall and the scenery was amazing. You wake up looking out onto a beautiful lake with many hikes in the vicinity. Lake Placid is a relatively short drive for some great dining options and entertainment. The house itself is very spacious, clean and well maintained. I didn't have a single complaint and can only recommend this property to others.”

“Gorgeous spot. My girlfriend and I were wanting to disconnect from city life and this couldn't have been more perfect. It was quiet and calm, so much so that we both could finish an entire book in a long weekend. I definitely recommend going out to the pond in the early morning. We were out there when the fog was rolling in and it was beautiful. I couldn't recommend this place more highly. ”

“We loved our stay at Horseshoe pond! It was a true Adirondack experience. The cabin had a great feel to it - all our needs were met with furnishings both comfortable and attractive. The views were beautiful in a very private setting. It was wonderful to relax in the adk chairs overlooking the pond. The paddles right from the property were spectacular down Deer River Flow. (There is even use of a canoe at the property!) Access to the rest of the park is easy - maps, adk magazines and info are available to peruse. This is by far the best place we have stayed in the Adirondacks. ”

“My family and I stayed at this lovely and scenic cottage in the summer and really enjoyed the peace and natural beauty we found. The cottage - really a spacious two-story house on a lake - was in great condition - everything clean and orderly and in good working condition. The view of the lake from the living room is stupendous. It is well located - near the college and local museums of natural history. I would highly recommend this cottage for anyone seeking a restful and inspiring stay in the Adirondacks. ”

“Bottom line, my husband and I are definitely coming back to this rental! We mostly like to canoe and hike in lesser populated/visited areas, and I think Franklin County fits the bill -- this was our frst time to this area. This rental made an excellent home base for a week in the Adirondacks, plus it does have the pond and Deer River Flow and meandering bog flow right off its own property. The house is actually quite spacious -- I think the photos really don't show you how much elbow room you get. With just two of us in the house we had way more than enough space. The house is nicely decorated with Adirondack themed items. It gets you into the spirit of the place. My first impression was that the house was very clean when we arrived. Plenty of supplies in-house such as toilet paper and paper towels, food staples like salt & pepper and basic spices, and dishes and dish towels, soap, etc. Pots and pans were kind of limited. The beds are firm, not saggy, and seem new, which I like. There were pillows and blankets. We brought our own sheets and towels. Water pressure was excellent and water heater kept up with our needs no problem. Everything in the house is in good condition. There are new windows, and they do all open (I'm an open-window kind of person), but a couple lack screens. (The picture windows in the LR don't open, being picture windows, of course.) There are a few other properties nearby, but the closest one -- which you can see from the yard -- seemed empty, the year-round neighbor was quiet for the most part (chainsaw during the day occasionally -- but had a dog that I never heard bark once), and a larger camp next door was mostly silent except for a family having some fun swimming and such on a couple of afternoons. Can't see that camp from the house and can't see the year round resident from the house either. It is quite private overall with a large yard all around the house. We did bring a canoe, but used the camp canoe for the pond, as the put-in is a short walk from the house ... but too far for us to feel like carrying our own heavy canoe over there more than once or twice. The canoe is an Old Town and was great for flat water and pushing over low beaver dams. There was firewood supplied, but we didn't make any fires in the fire pit. The propane grill worked great. It is small though -- perfect for us, but maybe small for a bigger group. There are lawn chairs you can use. (I brought some since I wasn't sure.) There is a TV and maybe half a dozen DVDs -- no TV reception. That was fine for us as we don't watch TV anyway, but if you like to watch movies you might want to bring your own. Lots of CDs for music at the house. I brought CDs and never bothered to listen to my own stuff. I liked the house CDs. A small book colletion at the house, but enough novels to get you through the week. Internet -- the owner told me there is a new Verizon cell tower. We do have Verizon cell phones, and we had service at the house. I do have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, so I brought that with my laptop and used the tablet as a hot spot and had internet service. There is no internet service otherwise. Lots of three-prong outlets around the house for your devices and chargers. There is only one place nearby to get supplies and food -- a small deli/grocery with daytime hours. But, the bonus us that you can walk to it from the house. Malone is the only town around we found with grocery stores and such -- about a 20 minute drive north. We ended up having a tire patched in Malone and checked out some shops one day. Overall it's your typical half-deserted upstate NY small town that had its hey-day in another era. But you can arrive with some basic food for one or two meals and then go to Price Chopper or Aldi's in Malone and buy all your food for the week and avoid civilzation after that. ;) Oh, and the house is not very far off of Rt 30, a main route through the area, so in the early morning you do get a fair amount of road noise at the property. I have to say though, the views outweigh the noise and the birds and loons don't seem to care... and then late at night (like 2 am) you can hear the occasional truck zooming by. During the day time the road noise is pretty much not noticeable, I think due to the wind and just general noise of the day (birds, yourself, etc). Again, good value for the money. I really didn't want to leave, and while we did a lot of outdoor stuff, I could have easily spent a couple of days just sitting in the yard, watching the pond and the wildlife and reading a book and napping. Really nice spot!”
