The calendar is now open for 2025!
Our vintage guest cottage has a village and wilderness location on the western arm of Cranberry Lake where the Oswegatchie River flows into the lake. Located on a point across from the historic village of Wanakena, it is a visual favorite for visitors touring the village on shore or by boat. From spring ephemerals (flowers) to summer swimming and hiking to autumn color, this secluded village is an attractive location for your Adirondack vacation. Great for s …mall group or family vacations. The comfortable 2 bedroom cottage sleeps 4, with an additional daybed (twin), appropriate for one or two couples, or a family with children. It has one full bath, a cozy living room, and a very nicely equipped kitchen with dining area. The ample waterfront sitting porch has views down to the dock and across the flow to a wooded shoreline and the village. Landline telephone, WIFI, washer and dryer are provided. Excellent swimming off the dock in protected water, with the village beach on the opposite shore suitable for young children. Four day-trip kayaks and a large stable canoe will take you down the flow and out onto the open waters of Cranberry Lake to picnic islands, trailheads, and wilderness campsites. The village of Wanakena is located inside the Adirondack Park on the northwest slope of the mountains near State Route 3 about 1 1/2 hours east of Watertown NY, and 1 hour west of the Saranac Lakes. The 1 mile access road off Rt. 3 provides seclusion and separation from road noise. The village was founded as a logging center in 1902, and has maintained its turn of the century character. There is a sense of community among the seasonal and full-time residents fostered by the village store, art gallery and information hub, historical society house, post office, church, summer concert series, and other community events. To get to the village center take the canoe across the Flow and land at the village dock, or take a walk across the newly restored historic footbridge. Four trailheads within a brief walk of the cottage provide access to the Five Ponds Wilderness, the largest contiguous wilderness area in the eastern US. A description of the Cranberry Lake Region including the Five Ponds trail system can be found on the following websites: cranberrylake50.org www.dec.ny.gov/lands/34719.html www.dec.ny.gov/lands/34715.html These trails provide opportunities for short hikes of a few miles, longer day hikes, and multiday hiking-camping. Many of them have destinations overlooking wild lake shoreline, and the upper Oswegatchie River. Wanakena's location on the western flow provides boat access to Cranberry Lake, one of the largest of the remote Adirondack lakes with its 55 miles of shoreline, about 85 percent of which is forest preserve. Along this wild shoreline is an extensive series of boat-access campsites, and trailheads leading into the wilderness. The NYS Ranger School, located down the Wanakena Flow a mile away, has an extensive system of forest roads and trails good for walking and biking. A trailhead provides access to the Peavine Creek trail system, another opportunity for hiking and more technical mountain biking. A short drive from Wanakena takes you to a launch point on the Oswegatchie River above the village, from where you can paddle upstream (no motor boats!) more than 15 miles as the river makes serpentine turns through marshlands and forested shoreline. Campsites provide opportunity for an overnight stay. Town resources: Ottos in the village center has fresh coffee and pastry, and some shelf- and frozen food, as well as local fresh vegetables and fruit in season. The village of Star Lake 6 miles away has a Dollar General, a convenience store with some groceries, a bank, a gas station, a pharmacy, a small but well equipped medical clinic/hospital, and a hardware store.

About Us: Elaine and David are college teachers with three grown children. We are swimmers, hikers, and paddlers, all of which we enjoy in Wanakena and throughout the Adirondacks. We also love traveling out west and have come to enjoy staying in affordable comfortable homes as we travel and explore the outdoors.
Why we think you will enjoy staying in Wanakena: The historic village of Wanakena is unique among small Adirondack villages for its seclusion (1 mile off the highway), location on the inlet to Cranberry Lake, one of the largest of the wilderness lakes in the mountains, and access to an extensive trail system in the Five Ponds Wilderness. In contrast with the most popular and publicized areas of the Adirondacks, the Cranberry Lake region is remarkably low key and free of tourist-induced bustle and clamor.
Why our property is special: Our cottage is located on the water across from the village. In and around Wanakena you will enjoy quiet waterways for swimming and paddling, hiking trails on which you cross paths infrequently with other hikers, surroundings typically so quiet that often you hear only the wind and the distant murmur of the rapids. Swimming, boating, and hiking are right out the door. If you are looking for an Adirondack outdoor experience with a peaceful village as your home base, you will love this cottage.

“My husband and I rented this little house for a week and it was absolutely lovely. The beds are so comfy. Location was perfect for hiking ,biking and water activies. The host couple were very nice and accommodating. It is semi private and has a beautiful view of the walking bridge. Lovely spot. We would definitely return again.”

“Our fourth visit to David and Elaine's delightful cottage was just as fun, refreshing and satisfying as our previous visits. This year we were there a little early in the season. The hamlet of Wanakena and the water were very quiet. The weather -- a little chilly and rainy at first -- kept us quiet, too. We got out almost every day, hiking and paddling, the obligatory 18 at the Clifton-Fine Municipal Nine (all fun, we don't keep score!), and this year we brought bikes for the first time. There's so much to do right here! Just walk out the door and you're off on a hiking adventure on the Moore Trail, Peavine Swamp Trail or any of the other amazing nearby trails. Gotta go to Otto's Abode to shop for treats and gifts. An outing to Jake's on the Lake for lunch and then hiking (OK, walking really) at Higley Flow State Park was wonderful and about as far afield as we went all week. David and Elaine make every effort to make us feel at home and without being intrusive make it clear that if we need anything, they're there. The cottage is cozy and warm and neat as a pin. The house rules are very easy to deal with, very reasonable and consistent with our own recycling and composting ethics. We talked gardening, flowers and herbs and I came home with a big pot of apple mint! We love Wanakena Guest Cottage! ”

“Eve and Doug are now familiar and very welcome guests in the cottage, the occasional year when they can't make it we miss them. Eve was kind enough to pick up 6 quarts of NYS strawberries at the market when they came up - some fresh on the morning cereal, but most turned into homemade jam for our children and grandchildren. Thanks Eve and Doug!”

“Wanakena Guest Cottage is a hidden gem and the perfect place to unwind and rest while enjoying the best the Adirondacks has to offer. It is located in the little town of Wanakena, a picturesque spot on the Oswegatchie. The waterfront location of the cottage is ideal. My husband and I spent some of our time at the cottage reading and swimming off the small dock. The water was perfect! The cottage was very clean and comfortable with plenty of space to stretch out and relax. The kitchen had everything we needed to feel right at home and create some memorable meals. There were plenty of lovely touches throughout the cottage and we spent our evenings having dinner on the screened-in porch enjoying the peaceful setting without being bothered by bugs. David and Elaine are superb hosts and had everything just right. They've put together a folder for the cottage with information about the trails and surrounding area that was helpful. They were also immediately available to answer any questions or requests we had. It was great having them next door. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your cottage. It felt just like home. We will definitely be back next year.”

“We simply adore Wanakena Guest Cottage! We were back for two weeks in July 2022, our third visit after a two-year hiatus. Two weeks was a perfect amount of time: We were able to decompress and truly enjoy our vacation. The cottage is perfect for us and everything is as pictured. The cottage is equipped with everything we need, instructions are clear and easy to follow. There's lots of information about places to go and things to do. Flowers greeted us upon our arrival and we were the grateful recipients of some of Elaine's marvelous baking! David and Elaine are close by and always available but never intrusive. Historic Wanakena is a truly special place on earth. There are lots of things to do and see right in Wanakena. Otto's Abode is a hub and anchor of the community and has everything from frozen treats to bug dope. Enjoy the interpretive signage located throughout the village and do absolutely visit the History Center! Don't miss the maze! Hike the fire tower. Each visit we venture a little further afield for hikes and paddles with great advice and guidance from David and Elaine. The highlight this year was a Bog River/Hitchens Ridge paddle and hike combo. We ventured to Potsdam for provisions one day, stopping at Jake's in Hannawa Falls for a delicious lunch on the way and touring the waterfalls along Tooley Pond Road on the way back. The local golf course, the Clifton Fine Municipal Nine, is challenging, fun, and rarely very busy. One thing about bug dope: Bring more than you think you will need. ”

“Eve and Doug are the epitome of the welcome guest in the cottage. They enjoyed the affordances of the village, and of the surrounding wilderness to the fullest - they were out almost every day exploring on the trails and on the water. And they left the cottage clean as if it were their own home. Eve and Doug, you are welcome back any time you chose to come.”

“The cottage is in a great location right on the lake/river in Wanakena. Pictures are a good representation of the cottage and the kitchen is fully stocked for cooking - one of the best equipped we have used. Very peaceful and lots of windows to look out of even when it's raining! David and Elaine are great hosts and were happy to give suggestions on what do/see/where to eat in the area. We arrived near the peak of foliage and it's beautiful in the Adirondacks. There is plenty of great hiking in the area, kayaks right from the cottage, and fishing off the dock. We also made day trips to Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, and Lake Placid.”
Owner's Response
“Stephanie and Nick were perfect guests. Every day they were either on a road trip in the Adirondacks, or out on one of the local trails. We crossed paths with them on the trail to Janack's Landing (trailhead close to the cottage) on a perfect Fall day. The forest and the beaver meadows were all in full color, and at the end of the trail a wonderful view of a remote wild part of the lake. And they left the cottage at the end of their stay in great shape.”

“The Wanakena Guest Cottage is perfectly located on the Oswegachie River with beautiful views and easy access to the little town of Wanakena. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated, clean and spacious. The large kitchen windows allow glorious sunshine to fill the room making it a wonderful place for enjoying a meal or that morning cup of coffee, or take that coffee out to the large screened in front porch overlooking the water. Such a great place to play a game or working on a puzzle. The living room is filled with comfortable furniture allowing for conversation or choosing and watching a dvd from a nice collection. The bedrooms are comfortable for sleeping. I found the cottage to be very clean, with products made available to keep it so. Elaine and David are close by, but never intruding, always available for help or suggestions that they feel would make your stay more pleasant. The autumn scenery was gorgeous, and I am anxious to return and enjoy a summer visit.”

“My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay at David and Elaine's charming cottage in the Adirondacks. We arrived at the peak of the autumn foliage, which took our breath away! Never have we witnessed a more stunning show of colors with endless beauty while hiking, biking, and kayaking. Paddling down the winding and wilder sections of the Oswegatchie river was one of the highlights of our week. Back at the cottage, it's clear how well cared for and super clean it is. The home is cozy, comfortable, filled with a creative eye for color and artwork. There's an enjoyable selection of books, DVD films, and games. The kitchen was a pleasure to work in, with everything needed for cooking and baking whatever your heart desires. We enjoyed spending time on their lovely screened-in porch, which faces the water and private dock. David and Elaine were terrific hosts, answering all our questions about the best hiking trails, history of the area, and generously allowing us the use of their kayaks. We are already looking forward to future visits and enthusiastically recommend a week at their lovely getaway! ”

“Joy and Geoffrey, you are superb guests! We were glad to provide guidance as you explored the trails and waterways in the area. And you left the cottage straightened up and clean beyond our most optimistic expectations! Some people (like you) understand that the cottage is not an anonymous rental unit, but rather a family to family rental arrangement. We enjoy making the cottage next to our house attractive and personable, and we are so glad that you appreciated it. Hope to see you next year. David and Elaine”

“This was our second visit to Wanakena Guest Cottage. We liked it so much after our summer 2018 visit that was decided to go back! This is a lovely house in a wonderful location and with very nice owners. David and Elaine are gracious hosts and they are nice people to be around. We prepared 3 meals/day and the house is fully stocked with cooking supplies for everything we needed. And having been there before, we knew exactly what food and supplies to bring. The house comes with kayaks which we happily used every day. This time we hiked daily and were able to explore more of the area. Our biggest complaint was the mosquitoes and deer fly's who were extra hungry this summer due to the wet spring. Note to self for next year - bring more lightweight long sleeve clothing LOL! We also attended a great concert in town on Friday night that was well attended by everyone. This rental and this town are absolute treasures for us with the right balance for vacation - outdoor activities, opportunities to talk with people or just have quiet time. It is truly easy living in paradise! Thank you David and Elaine we will be back!”
Owner's Response
“Christina and Michael, we were really pleased to host you again this year. It was nice to see you going out hiking and paddling on the flow, and to see how you have immersed yourselves in the culture of the village. Christina, your comment about light but long sleeve clothing is well taken: not only as shelter from the mosquitos and deerfly, but also as sun protection in the woods and especially on the water. Elaine likes to wear a long sleeve high collar rash guard shirt when we're going to be out in the canoe all day.”

“My husband and I were more than pleased with Wanakena. It was a very comfortable, accommodating, and lovely Adirondack cottage with large windows making the spaces bright and cheerful. Although we didn't cook much everything needed was supplied. The screened-in front porch, mere feet from the water, was wonderful for swimming, boating, or just plain dreaming as the breezes wafted through. Wanakena was a real find.”

“We adored Wanakena Guest Cottage. It's a charming spot on the Wanakena Flow acrosss from the equally charming and delightful hamlet of Wanakena. We chose this destination because it looked so appealing and because it met our goals for price, amenities, location and recreation for the week. Four of six outings (two paddles, two hikes) started and finished at the cottage. Perfect! The owners were right there if we needed them but never obtrusive and we really enjoyed visiting with them! We just can't say enough about how comfortable we were (after switching to the second bedroom -- we agreed with other reviewers on the bed in the first room; too hard). The cottage was picture-perfect and clean as a whistle upon our arrival with flowers to greet us! Everything we needed was right there. We liked that the owners' values for recycling and composting aligned with our own and we found it easy to comply with simple requests for trash sorting, etc. This is a very tastefully decorated cottage; so relaxing just to be there! It's a small place that suited two of us for a week perfectly. The final evening a concert on the Village Green capped off a magical week. We'd love to come back!”

“My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful week in Wanakena. What a true gem in the Adirondacks! David and Elaine were gracious hosts and the cottage was the perfect place to stay. We have rented places from owners from all over the world and this cottage was the most well stocked we have ever seen. It had all the amenities needed to make us feel comfortable from all the great cooking items, to towels, linens and blankets, a grill, and kayaks. The location was perfect for us as it was right on the river/flow so we could kayak daily. We also did short hiking trips every day and enjoyed that very much. There is a village just a short walk across the beautiful bridge. The local gathering area was a nice way to meet the locals and visitors. We even attended a concert in the village and that was special. David and Elaine were great to meet and talk with and they provided anything we needed, even delicious herbs from their garden! We would love to return to this special place again. Thank you for a lovely experience!”

“ It was lovely living for a week at the Wanakena Guest Cottage. Living for a whole week without any 'To Do' lists. At least nothing written down. Our day's agenda became very simple: drinking coffee in Adirondack chairs on our dock, kayaking and swimming in the 'flow' of Cranberry Lake, walking across the suspension bridge to buy lettuce from the stand outside Otto's Abode, and reading books. We felt as if we had traveled back in time when everything was simpler, and we loved every precious minute. The Wanakena Guest Cottage is the perfect place to unwind. It is tastefully decorated and furnished, with such comfortable beds and linens and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook all of our meals. This was our first experience in the Adirondacks and we are already looking forward to returning. Next time we might be more adventurous and hike on the many trails in the area, but then again.... we're not making any promises...or lists.”

“Dear Gloria and Barry, it was a delight having you and your daughter as guests in the cottage. We do put effort into making the cottage a comfortable retreat, and we're gratified that you enjoyed it as you describe. “The cottage was a delight; serene, warm, inviting and comfortable. We were appreciative of the hospitality and availability of our hosts. The setting on the Oswegatchie estuary was perfect and convenient for kayaking and boating. We look forward to coming back in the future.”
Owner's Response
“Interesting term "estuary", Bob. Strictly it's a coastal term, but it fits the situation here nicely. The Wanakena Flow, where Wanakena is located, is a transition zone between the Oswegatchie river upstream of the footbridge, and the mail body of Cranberry Lake. In the Spring or when there has been substantial rain in the watershed there is some slow current; otherwise the water is almost still. Thanks for the encouraging comments. We're glad that you, Carolyn, and the family enjoyed your stay.”

“Our stay in the Wanakena guest cottage was wonderful. The photos of the interior of the cottage do not do it justice. The cottage is clean, comfortable and spacious for two people. The two bedrooms each had full sized beds. The porch facing the water gets ample breeze most of the day, and is not just screened, but has windows all around. The view is delightful, and there was just enough activity across the flow at the village dock/beach to provide for some pleasant distraction. The hosts were in residence next door, and made us feel welcome, but not intruded upon. Hiking and canoeing opportunities were numerous in the area. Getting a fine meal was about a 45 minute drive, a couple of closer options for a bite out were nearby. Did i mention that the cottage was clean??? The value, location and comfort were all ideal. We expect to be back.”

“Chris and Nienna really exemplify the guests we enjoy having in the cottage: they went hiking and boating, preferring the canoe rather than the kayaks, and enjoyed fishing right off the dock. And they took good care of the cottage while they were here, and left it neat and tidy.”

“My boyfriend and I had the best time at this charming cottage in Wanakena! The owners were incredibly helpful and friendly. They took time out of their day to talk with us about hiking and boating in the area and even gave us a tour of their beautiful garden next door. When we arrived there were fresh flowers from the garden in vases throughout the cottage and homemade cake to greet us, which was such a lovely touch! The town itself is wonderfully peaceful and quiet- we only saw between 2-8 other people a day, and it was just the escape we were looking for. The little dock at the back of the property is perfect for relaxing by the water and watching the boats go by. We enjoyed being on the water so much that we often ate dinner on the back porch and watched the sun set. We even heard coyotes two nights, which was an experience to be remembered! My boyfriend enjoyed taking out the kayaks on the flow several times, and we both had a great time hiking in the area. The cottage is in a perfect location with easy access to many trails. And if we felt like staying in, the cottage was well-equipped with everything we could need. Our only complaint was that the bed was a bit firmer than we'd prefer, but by the end of the week we were used to it and it never prevented us from sleeping. Ultimately, we immediately fell in love with this little retreat and the town of Wanakena. We loved it so much that we're already eager to sign up for a stay next summer and my boyfriend even began daydreaming about retiring in the area! Thanks to the owners for making our week in Wanakena the best of the summer!”

“My family and I enjoyed the best week of the summer in Wanakena! We immediately made ourselves at home in the cozy cabin, then headed for the water in the canoe. The kids (4 and 6) played on the beach and swam while my husband and I relaxed on the bench taking in the scenery (the bridges reflection will forever be etched in my memory), and stretching after a long day of driving. We cooked dinner on the grill and found every type of kitchen item we needed. The beds were comfy and falling asleep to the breeze off the water kept us in til way after our usual waking time. Our first full day we once again journeyed out in the canoe and we spotted many basking turtles, plenty of ducks, and a mink! Being on the flow part of the river/lake means there is little boat travel and we felt safe the whole time rowing up and down fishing and exploring the lake's edge. We made it to Tupper Lake the next day, and The Wild Center was our destination. The kids had a blast and its totally worth the visit, even for adults with out children. Highlights were the human size spider web, the otters, the snapping turtles we watched while eating our lunch and the new iForest music installment. The playground, and waters edge walk in downtown were a good way to spend an hour before it was dinner time. We ended up at Raquette River Brewery and had some good beer, a raspberry cider and BBQ from the food truck. Casual eating outside was good for the kids. And an ice cream at a little place in Cranberry Lake to top off the day! The next two days were so beautiful, we never left Wanakena. We fished, walked, canoed and swam away for two days. We mostly used the canoe as a family, but there were kayaks at the ready as well. We went back and forth from the cute little town square and beach, Otto's abode (tiny cute store) the little playground so many times we lost count! Between the canoe and the bridge we put on lots of trips.Be sure to read all the informative signs of the history of Wanakena and Cranberry lake. And take the self guided walking tour. A great local history lesson. The kids had a blast in the garden maze that is being constructed and finding and hiding "kindness rocks" along the way. Thursday night we rowed to The Pinecone Restaurant up the flow a bit (15 mins maybe) It was nothing fancy, but the kids were so excited to take the canoe for dinner! If you do go, know to go early. We made it just in time at about 5:30-5:45 then it got really busy with just one waitress. On Friday we ventured down to Blue Mtn Lake to the Adirondack Experience Museum. It was worth the drive and we got our admissions $ worth. Learning for all ages and the new interactive displays were very impressive. leave early and get there when they open. We stopped in Long Lake on the way back for dinner at The Adirondack Hotel for our anniversary dinner. It was "ok". The scallops and clams were good, our swordfish and steak sandwich were a little over done. The kids enjoyed their pizza. It was definitely busy and they were as efficient as a Friday night at a summer place could try to be. The dcor was fun to look at and since we had just come from the ADK museum the kids recognized many of the items. We also made a quick swim time in the beach across the road, it was fun! If you need any supplies the little grocery store right there was great from fishing to meat and everything in between.Saturday was our last day at Wanakena, so we wanted to relax before we had to get back to reality! The weather was a little rainy in the morning, so we watched a movie, read a little and enjoyed the scones Elaine brought us! Eventually the sky cleared and we fished and swam and the kids played outside the cabin on the big rocks that constantly attracted kids sized imagination and adventures! On Saturday night there was a band in the gazebo at Otto's Abode and we made our way over to listen. There was a pretty nice crowd of people, several that we had met through out the week. They were all friendly and we definitely felt welcome as "vacationers". It was the perfect festive ending to our week! Some highlights: making a fire and smores, catching big bass and pike, mink and beaver sighting, visiting the neighbors garden and eating cucumbers, hiking in the inlet trail and seeing a brown bat catching bugs in the middle of the day in a shady glen, kindness rocks, and our daughter swimming from the beach to the dock and back twice. Things a mom was thankful for: laundry facilities and all the kitchen tools that were needed. A few things that we were wishing for, but in no way impeded our experience: an outdoor dining area, a table for the dock, maybe a bigger dock If you are traveling with kids, bring kids dvds (although I have to say, we really only watched movies a few times, it was nice to be off electronics for the week. But we had great weather) Internet is strong though so you can stream. Bring lots snacks and food, stores are few and far between. thanks! ”

“We have been going to various areas of the Adirondacks for years, and after our most recent trip, Wanakena has become our new favorite place -- in large part because of the home-away-from-home feeling of this charming and comfortable cottage. We had a blast during our one week stay, swimming from the dock, kayaking on the river and into Cranberry Lake, biking to nearby towns, and hiking from many of the trailheads that are a stone's throw from the front door. It would be very easy to come to this cottage, park your car for two weeks, and not move it again until you depart. David and Elaine are wonderful hosts -- available and nearby, but not intrusive -- and the home they cultivate for their guests is just perfect. It is larger in real life than it looks in the photos -- but still perfectly cozy for a couple or small family. On rainy days, you can stream a movie on your laptop, play one of the board games available, or just curl up with a great book and a blanket. Inside the cottage is a great folder of information about local attractions. Check out the two brochures of favorite hikes and kayaks in the Clifton-Fine area (they are also available near the local history kiosk across the footbridge). We did every suggested hike/paddle, and would recommend them all. If you've got stamina, make your way from the cottage into Cranberry Lake and explore Dead Creek Flow. Just make sure you remember you need to paddle back -- it's a long journey, but well worth it. We had never seen so many turtles, cranes, birds of prey, fish, and other wildlife in one spot. Spectacular! Do yourself a favor. Stop looking and book this cottage immediately! You won't regret it. ”

“Jennifer and Alix are amazing visitors to have at a summer cottage in the Adirondacks. They swam and hiked, and took the kayaks out onto the main part of Cranberry Lake to Joe Indian Island and camped overnight, and paddled up the upper (wild) Oswegatchie so far that they ran into beaver dams and blowdown near High Falls (quite a day outing); and after each adventure they returned to the comfortable cottage to rest up for the next one. And, they took wonderful care of the cottage. Jennifer and Alix, we'd love to have you back next summer (or this Fall if you want to do a foliage trip).”

“This is our 3rd year staying in Wanakena at this cottage. It is comfortable, well maintained and a great location. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking and there are plenty of beach towels to take down to the dock. Our kids love swimming and kayaking in the river. We've hiked extensively throughout the area, always good trails. It's close quarters for a family of 5 but we always have tons of quality family time when we are at this cottage. Just in case it's important to you or your teenagers, the wifi signal is great!”
Owner's Response
“We always love having this family! All of the kids are so engaged! It is because of families like theirs that we decided to invest in more kayaks for the cottage. If we get a group of 4 or 5 people who love the outdoors, the Wanakena Guest Cottage is a great fit. Everyone seems to love swimming, kayaking, hiking, cooking and hanging out. Their youngest daughter always has her birthday in Wanakena and we always look forward to conversations with her. A delightful group!”

“We stayed at David and Elaine's cottage for a week - it was really perfect for us. Great hiking close to the 5 Ponds Wilderness area, beautiful kayaking at the door to the cottage. We were perfectly comfortable, the cottage is fully equipped, but has a really vintage feel to it. Comfortable beds and the whole cottage was very clean. The screened porch was so wonderful for sitting and watching the river, reading and talking. David and Elaine were great hosts - we were treated to Elaine's plum cake which was really good, and they were very helpful with trails and anything else we asked about. Thanks for a great week - I miss it already and we will come back. ”

“Joyce and Larry were great guests! They were so nice and so enthusiastic about the area. I loved hearing about all the hikes they took and how much they enjoyed this true wilderness area. Joyce and Larry left the cottage in great shape; we were very happy with their stay all the way around, and they would be welcome back any time! A perfect fit.”

“The cottage is clean. comfortable and has a fully stocked kitchen. It was comfortable and enough room for our family of three adults and two children. The owners were right next door if you needed anything. It's really a great place for the price. Only thing I would like to suggest is a new bed in the room closest to the porch, that bed is brutal by the end of the week I could hardly move. If you are a boater, the "dock" is less than desirable. The kids had a ball, thank you for letting us use your place!”
Owner's Response
“Dear L – We’re sorry you were not as comfortable as we would have liked you to be. The bed that was not to your liking is a Euro-style platform bed with the mattress on slats rather than a box spring, yielding a ‘firm’ rather than a 'pillowtop' experience, which might have been more to your liking. And your comment on the dock is quite to the point: it’s a small dock which in a pinch can accommodate a large inboard-outboard boat such as yours, but then feels crowded for the use of sitting, swimming, and launching the kayaks which we provide for our guests. If you plan to return to Cranberry Lake next summer we strongly suggest that you pick a camp on the Columbian or Lone Pine Roads at the other end of the lake, some of which have larger docks.”

“This was our family's second year spending a week at this cottage and once again it was an outstanding vacation. The cottage is perfectly furnished and between the awesome porch, the family room and the well-stocked kitchen it has everything you need or could want. The cottage has a rustic ADK feel to it but is also in excellent condition and has several modern conveniences. The location is perfect for an Adirondack getaway. Wanakena is quiet and peaceful but is only a short drive from Star Lake if you need groceries or supplies. Tupper Lake is a little farther but still very reasonable and we even took a day trip up to Lake Placid one day. The cottage is within walking distance to the two trail heads for the High Falls Loop (part of the Cranberry 50) and both offer several different destinations (depending on the distance you are up for) as well as some of the best wilderness hiking in the state. The dock makes deciding to go swimming or kayaking so quick and easy and I don't think a day went by that the kids were not in the water. Elaine and David (the owners) do everything possible to make you feel welcome and address any questions or issues pretty much immediately. All in all this rental provides a great experience and we always leave and talk about our plans for coming back the next year. ”
Owner's Response
“Dear Mike and family, we enjoyed having you as guests this year as much as we did last year. The cupcakes Zoey brings us from her birthday party have become a special treat. Our granddaughter Francie says she misses having Zoey come over to play. We hope to see you next year!”

“Simply put, I love this place. It's rustic and cozy, clean and well kept. I agree with all the other reviews that the screened porch is a highlight, but the entire house is wonderful. And the cottage is perfectly fitting for the little hamlet of Wanakena -- they compliment each other. I was there for a few days alone, and then joined for a few days by my grown son. I fished and painted. We both canoed and hiked, and sat talking around the outside fire ring at night. It was idyllic -- the perfect retreat. I will be returning, with friends and family, as soon and as often as I can.”
Owner's Response
“Thank you, Brian, for the compliments. We're glad that you and your son enjoyed your stay, and you are of course welcome to come again when you have the chance.”

“Well, we loved it so much in June that we went back for a long weekend in October. We got lucky--the weather and leaves were in full glory! Fall here is wonderful--fewer people and bugs, still great weather and hiking, and even more beautiful views. The cottage was warm and cozy, and we enjoyed sipping on hot chocolate on the porch and playing Pictionary. We'll be back!”

“We're so glad you and your family enjoyed your October stay in the cottage. You're right, if the weather is good Fall is a lovely time in Wanakena and on the lake. Hope to see you next year!”

“I stayed here with my two sisters and it was so relaxing! Wanakena had just the right amount of activity for me, but maybe too little for my one sister, Ha. One night we even saw a black bear in the backyards of the homes across the water. He was just taking a stroll... The water was wonderful for swimming and taking out the Kayaks, it was so nice to have them included. (the deck could use a ladder or maybe just a rail on the stair for getting in and out for those who are older)We practically lived on the back porch every day, tons of windows for an uninterrupted view and breeze as well as very comfy furniture. The home is outfitted with pretty much everything you need to live comfortably; we were there for two weeks. (Maybe toss up some more opaque curtains and add some in the Living Room.) We didnt even use the outside grill because a wonderful cast iron pan/griddle was provided and I prefer my burger on cast iron anyway! The kitchen is Fully equipped which makes it easy to be in this woodsy little town and prepare most all your meals as there is not many places to eat out that are close (though we did miss a microwave a little bit). We didnt get a chance to go to the Pinecone restaurant, but will next time! The internet was spotty sometimesbut worked well enough on my PC so I could work remote the first week I was there. It was just streaming Pandora on my phone that was an issue. The owners were so nice and responsive to this issue, couldnt ask for more. The decorations of this place were just right. I have stayed in many house rentals where there is so much clutter its unnervingnot here, it is decorated nicely, yet in a minimalist way I thinkjust enough that you can feel like its your home too for the time you are there. Nice and clean too! We loved that Wanakena had a little general store, but unfortunately the owner said they were closing for good this October. Though sad, there is an equally good store in Cranberry which isnt too far away, so go there and support a local business!I feel like I am missing something, but I would recommend this for a nice and quiet getaway where you arent planning to drive all around the Adirondacksthough its not that far to the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake.”
Owner's Response
“Thank you Salena - It was so nice having you and yours sisters stay in the Wanakena Guest Cottage. It's always enjoyable for us when our guests are enjoying their stay. Loved seeing you floating around in the Wanakena Flow. Stay tuned about the General Store. Rumor has it that another couple will be taking over the space and turning it into a wonderful gathering place including coffee, music and art. We are all excited about the possibilities. As always, we will take your review to heart - never know what improvements will pop up between now and next summer! Perhaps a campy microwave will appear:).”

“Our family had a fantastic time at the Wanakena Guest Cottage. The cottage had everything we needed, and certainly more, with comfortable beds and furniture, beautiful art on the walls and a very well-stocked kitchen for cooking. The screen porch was our favorite place to read or play games, eat or just talk. The dock below was an ever present invitation to swim in the cool flowing water of the Oswegatchie. Our kids had their first experiences with kayaks and we used them and the canoe every day! There are also so many hikes to choose from in the area that there is always the feeling that there is more to do. Indeed we left lots undone that we hope to do next time. Locally the kids enjoyed helping out by kayaking across the flow to buy small forgotten items from the General Store; traveling a bit further afield we all enjoyed the Wild Center at Tupper Lake, and the Adirondack Museum on our way home. The owners were kind enough to give us firewood on several occasions so we could have fires in the fire pit out back. Around the fire we watched the full moon rise in the sky as our potatoes cooked in the coals. The area is remote and yet has everything we needed for a real recreative break from our everyday lives. Thank you for sharing your cottage with us!”
Owner's Response
“Hilary, it's nice to hear that you and you family had a good time here, and we're glad that you found so many things to do. You and other families used the kayaks so much that we acquired another one so that all three kids will have their own next summer. We've been so busy that we just got around to visiting the Wild Center a few days ago. We had a great time on the elevated "Wild Walk" - our daughter and her family had a ball scrambling around in the giant spider web. You and your family were wonderful, and left the cottage in good shape. We hope to host you again next year!”

“Our family of five recently stayed at the cottage and had a most enjoyable week. Upon arriving we were very pleased with the open well lit cottage and the family all quickly dove into the river for a refreshing swim. The water was deep right off the dock but there were areas for our children to play in more shallow water by utilizing jackets to float over to the local beach to play. The town is quite small but we loved the general store and had a great dinner at the local diner which the owners had suggested in their materials. The house itself is perfectly stocked for a comfortable stay and easily slept our five. For recreational activities we swam daily, used the kayaks and canoes to drift along the beautiful Oswegatchie and took a boat ride onto Cranberry Lake. The town is quiet and we frequently felt as if we had the river to ourselves. We were also quite pleased with the information that the owners provided to us as throughout the week we utilized the brochure on the top ten hikes in Clifton/Fine and visited the large white pine via canoe, hiked to the top of a mountain and onto the fire tower (five minute drive to trail head) and also went to rainbow falls all of which were very doable for our youngest who is 4. A great stay in a cool little historic town!”

“Our family of five spent a full week comfortably tucked into this beautiful cottage. The owners welcomed us warmly and offered their help for any situation or questions that we had. The interior decor was modern and rustic as well as comfortable. We absolutely loved using the kayaks and canoe and our kids spent a lot of time swimming in the river. We did lots of hiking, climbed Cat Mountain and played on the nearby playground; there was even a Celtic orchestra concert in the center square. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking and baking and with the gas grill, we grilled every night! We are already excited for next year!!!”

“Thanks Janet - We also thoroughly enjoyed your family's visit. Your stay was just how we envisioned use of the guest cottage - lots of happy activity and swimming and boating and plenty of quiet time for all. We're so glad you enjoyed the area as much as we do.”

“My family of 5 happily rented the Wanakena cottage for the weekend of July 4th through the next week. We were greeted with homemade delicious scones and wild flowers though-out. The cottage is right on the water and our favorite feature was the screened in porch. Day,evening and night we all gravitated to the delightful porch to chat read, and eat. The cottage is a flash to the past as is the town. The 4th of July parade was so entertaining and small town proud. From Smokey the Bear to Mrs, Claus, Uncle Sam and the cutest little cows, it was great entertainment. We had great local hikes, drove to 3 mountain hikes Bear, Debar and Owl's Head. Kayaked and canoed. Dined at the Pinecone for local fare but cooked in mostly. The host and hostess are very helpful and friendly It was a very relaxing week. I am missing that porch right now.”

“It was so nice to have your family as guests, and we're delighted that you enjoyed Wanakena, the cottage, and the surrounding area that we love so much. We were gratified to see you enjoy the boats and the water. It's exactly how we have envisioned families using our cottage.”

“The pictures on this site do not begin to do justice! This cottage is perfectly located--still waters that are just a short paddle to the beach and general store across the way, the Ranger School, little islands on Cranberry Lake to explore, great fishing spots. Our boys had a wonderful time! The cottage is more than well-equipped: you'll have everything you need to make gourmet meals every day, or just paddle to the little diner 10 minutes away. The enclosed porch (no bugs!) that looks out onto the water is huge, and a great place to hang out at the beginning or end of the day. You're a short walk from multiple hikes. We spent one rainy day at the Wild Center, which was about a 40 minute drive away, but if the weather's nice, there's practically no reason to leave a short radius because there's so much to do right here! The owners have a canoe (not tippy at all) and 2 kayaks, so we really just needed to show up with food, and we were all set. We will definitely be back! ”
Owner's Response
“Thanks Karen and Chris, and kids, you were the perfect guests. The fact that you made it out to Joe Indian Island with the kids on the main part of the lake was impressive. Thanks for leaving the cottage in such good shape; we would love to have you come back.”

“When we discovered this warm-hearted cottage last summer, we made the rental our go-to away-from-home refuge and piled up a few months of lovely Adirondack memories. Quintessential Adirondacks without touristy hype. Wanakena is a small, serene village. Grey Cottage, fixed up by old family friends, has old-school woodsy charm. From Inuit art on the walls to cozy wicker and pillows on the porch with views of Cranberry Lake, sunsets and mist rising from the water in the morning. The house, built during the Adirondack era of lumbering, has vintage wood paneling that even covers the ceilings. Porcelain bathtub is the deep, soaking kind. I came here to work on a writing project and to hang out with the family that includes two teenage boys who fished, swam and hiked around taking pictures. I went for runs along forest-shaded hiking trails that wind through bogs and streams. The general store and post office is a five-minute walk away for ice cream, blueberries for pancakes, maple syrup and balsam pillow souvenirs. The house is right on the lake edge. Water is clear and cool and makes for smooth swimming, day and night. The living room has a great flat screen for movie watching. Kitchen is so well equipped I baked muffins for breakfast, made chocolate chip cookies, guacamole and grilled chicken and hamburger dinners. The front porch, our favorite reading spot, has a good table for puzzles and another by the couch where we played Risk on rainy days. The stone dock, steps away, is perfect for sitting with a cup of coffee in the morning and watching that mist rise in wisps from the flat dawn water. The place comes with kayaks for paddling around the lake. We went out to the nearby shallow water and farther to the dock at the Pine Cone restaurant where the burgers are big and the fish fry good and crisp. Go farther, beyond the cottage-dotted shores of the wider lake, over to the narrow neck with rope swing where the boys had a blast splashing into the water. On the other side of the narrows theres a ranger school and wilderness with spots for pulling in at a wooded beach and tying up at a dock for a hike to see a giant old tree. At night, theres no light pollution obscuring the stars. We took long walks, roasted marshmallows at the fire pit and thought about coming back again.”
