DISCOVER THE NORTH WOODS
The Sawyer's Cottage is located on Keese Mill Road in Paul Smiths, NY. The St. Regis River runs along this well-maintained road with old style Adirondack homes that at one time housed the many loggers, sawyers, and Adirondack guides who worked in the area. This is where Teddy Roosevelt canoed and walked the trails as a boy, exploring our lakes and boreal forest and in 1877 publishing "The Summer Birds of the Adirondacks in Franklin County, New York". Constructed in …the 1890s by Moses Sawyer, our newly renovated, old-style, one and a half story cottage rests at the edge of the St. Regis Wilderness Canoe Area, a perfect place for our guests to enjoy the natural beauty of the northern Adirondacks.
Hiking, running and biking, canoeing, birding, fishing, XC skiing, snowshoeing, and Alpine skiing are favorite activities for visitors. Our location provides convenient and nearby access to the Middle Branch of the St. Regis River and more than 58 lakes and ponds in the Canoe Area, the Black Pond and Long Pond Heritage Brook Trout fishing area, the trailheads for St. Regis Mountain and Jenkins Mountain, the Paul Smiths VIC with trails for hiking, XC skiing and snowshoeing, and the campus of Paul Smiths College. Four excellent downhill ski centers, the nearby towns of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, and numerous surrounding ponds, lakes, trails and mountains, are all within reasonable driving distances.
MORE THINGS TO DO
Of course, there is fishing. Brook trout, lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and splake, small mouth and large mouth bass, pike, perch and panfish, even land-locked salmon abound in the waters of our lakes and ponds. Guide services, fishing licenses and equipment, rentals for canoes, small boats, and paddle boards are available close by. Hikers find the trails outside our doors great for birding, photography, plein air painting, berry picking, mountain top viewing, exercise and physical training. The winter brings the beauty of snow cover on quiet XC ski and snowshoe trails. Take advantage of the perfect ice-fishing days on the same lakes we paddled just months before. Some folks downhill ski or snowboard at Mt. Pisgah, Titus, Tupper or the northeast's best, Whiteface Mountain. Don't miss the history, the arts, entertainment and many cultural and environmental activities at Paul Smiths College VIC, Bluseed Studio, Saranac Lake Artworks and other local art galleries, Saranac Lake's Winter Carnival, Lake Placid Center for the Arts and the Olympic venues.
FOUR SEASON COMFORT
The Sawyer's Cottage is a small, cozy house with open and light living areas. Our living room is a warm space with a new, easy to operate wood stove and firewood provided, sofa, chair with ottoman and two rockers. A small library of paperbacks, magazines, cookbooks, guidebooks, local publications, maps, games and music is available along with a CD player/radio. The kitchen is bright and appointed with a generous supply of good dishes, utensils, food prep/serving materials and cookware, an electric stove and oven, small microwave, full sized refrigerator/freezer, toaster, dishwasher, and drip coffee maker. You'll find a clear description for using household conveniences posted in an information notebook and a large trail map on the wall for planning outings.
Three upstairs bedrooms are carpeted and outfitted with a queen size bed and four single beds. The beds are made with fresh linens, pillows, and plenty of blankets, quilts or comforters. There is ample space for your clothing in two dressers and two good-sized closets. Three auxiliary electric baseboard heaters keep each room a perfect temperature for individual occupants. The bathroom is located downstairs between the living room and dining room. It is spacious with lovely fixtures, good lighting, a linen closet full of bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths, an original cedar panel ceiling and an immaculate claw foot tub. The shower is great, but a soak in the old tub is especially soothing and relaxing.
The faucets run excellent water for drinking, food preparation, and bathing. The main heating system provides comfortable humidity with stable air temperature throughout the well-insulated house. The back door entrance area has slate floors with a washing machine and dryer, coat racks, a bench, and a rack for storing skis, poles, snowshoes and fishing gear. Five miles to the local market, post office, diner and church - twelve miles to the town of Saranac Lake.
