THE SETTING
Twin Pines has almost four acres of forest, without another house in view, and almost 600 feet of lakefront on a sheltered cove. Osgood Pond, described by The New York Times as "a pristine mountain lake," is 1-1/2 miles long, with much of its shoreline forever-wild State land. Bald eagles, loons, otters and beavers make their home here. Several old great camps, one of them the summer residence of Calvin Coolidge, add historic charm to the lake. At the waterfront, you will find a dock, canoe, three kayaks, a rowboat and a shallow, sandy swimming area for kids.
THE PROPERTY
As you enter the house through the paneled entryway, you are struck by the two-story window wall overlooking woods and lake and by the massive stone fireplace. You're in the great room, a paneled expanse that includes a well-equipped kitchen with a large island and granite countertops, a dining area by the windows, the living area with comfortable seating, and sliding glass doors to a deck facing the lake. The decorating, paintings, taxidermy, and collectibles are Adirondack rustic. In the loft you'll find a futon, rocking chairs, a compact stereo with Nano dock, and a smart HDTV with basic cable and a DVD player. The house has wireless high-speed internet access (bring your own laptop). The master bedroom suite is large, with its own stone fireplace, four-poster queen bed and walk-in closet. French doors lead to a large bathroom with double vanity, double whirlpool tub, and a tiled shower. On the other end of the house, you will find the airy Loon Room with queen brass bed, the cozy Fish Room with twin beds, and a second bathroom with tub and vanity. The bedrooms are named for their decor. A paneled entry room with bench and closets provides a convenient place to leave your boots and gear. Other amenities inside include a washer and dryer, board games, jigsaw puzzles, and a collection of Adirondack books and maps. Outside, you will find a deck running the length of the house with a Weber gas grill, picnic table, and Adirondack chairs. Just off the deck is a screened gazebo, a comfortable retreat for watching the woods or reading a book. Adjacent to the house is a two-car detached garage with an upstairs seasonal recreation room equipped with ping pong table, leather couch and chairs, a cozy reading area, puzzle table, high-speed wifi, and a small refrigerator.
NEARBY ACTIVITIES
Twin Pines has a great location, isolated but close to many attractions. You're in the canoe and kayak hub of the Adirondacks. You can paddle down Osgood's outlet -- a wild river where you'll often see Great Blue Heron, or up its inlet to Jones Pond, or through its tiny canals to two other ponds. You're also on the edge of the St. Regis Canoe Wilderness, dotted with motorless lakes. The hiking is great too, from rugged mountains to the gentler trails near the house and at Paul Smiths College Visitor Interpretative Center, only two miles away. Fishing in Osgood Pond is very good, with bass and pike the main sport fish. A couple of nearby ponds are noted for trout. Interesting golf courses are within an easy drive. Back roads and trails provide excellent biking opportunities. You're 10 miles from Saranac Lake, a charming town with a lively arts scene, and 20 miles from Lake Placid, with many restaurants and shops, plus the Olympic facilities. If the peace and quiet get to you, you're less than two hours from Montreal.
FALL AND WINTER
We'd like to put in a plug for fall and winter at Twin Pines. Fall, because most of the visitors are gone and you have the lake almost to yourself. The days are crisp and the colors glorious -- perfect for hiking and paddling. Winter, because you're in the middle of a cross-country skiers paradise with miles of groomed and wilderness trails. The Visitor Interpretative Center offers a large network of groomed trails for all levels of skiers and separate trails for snowshoers. Lake Placid is at its liveliest as the winter sports capital of the Northeast, with activities ranging from downhill skiing to world-class luge, bobsled and ski-jumping competitions. After a day of play, you can unwind in the whirlpool tub, warm your toes by a fireplace, and watch snowflakes float by the soaring windows.

Why our property is special: Twin Pines is on a cove that offers calm waters and a beautiful mountain vista across the lake. With extensive water frontage and state land on one side, the dock is private, with the closest dock almost 500 feet away. While secluded, Twin Pines provides up-to-date amenities, from high-speed Internet to a whole-house generator, in case of a blackout. Because the house is our home away from home, it is well-equipped and filled with Adirondack art and antiques we have collected over the years.

“Our family had a wonderful vacation at our recent stay at Twin Pines. The house was well stocked and is just as pictured and described. It is a very private setting and was furnished with Adirondack decor. This was our first stay at Twin Pines and would certainly go back again. The owners were very accommodating and answered all our questions. The house is lakefront and my husband took full advantage of the location. The bass fishing was excellent and my husband was not disappointed. The location is perfect for taking in all the sights the area has to offer including Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Whiteface Mountain and the VIC. We would highly recommend staying at this beautiful home.”

“My husband and I are repeat renters and we had another wonderful stay at Twin Pines. We love how quiet and peaceful it is. From the moment you walk through the door you feel at home. We cook most of our meals so we make good use of the great kitchen (my favorite kitchen of all the rentals we've had over the years). It is very user friendly and well supplied with pots and pans, etc. It has plenty of cabinet space to put your own food items away. The master bedroom bed and pillows are comfortable. Being hikers, I love the entry mud room with the wall of closet space so all our gear can be tucked away and that there is even a clothes line in the basement. There are many hiking trails nearby, or short drives away, for a variety of skill levels. We also enjoy quietly fishing on the dock. The Loons were very vocal this year...I just love listening to them. This year my husband saw one of the mature bald eagles that nest at the pond. I always enjoy sitting on the deck or in the gazebo after a day of hiking. The fireplace is wonderful, though this year it was too warm for us to make use of it. Looking forward to returning to Twin Pines. Thank you Bob and Charlotte for sharing this little piece of heaven.”

“Our family of four have throughly enjoyed our stays at Twin Pines. Osgood Pond is beautiful and peaceful, and Twin Pines is nestled on a great secluded corner from which to enjoy the area and all it has to offer. We love that Twin Pines lets us take advantage of all the nearby mountain hikes, relaxing trails at the VIC, visits to Lake Placid, and even a few outings to nearby Donnellys for ice cream. But, the best part about Twin Pines for us is that when we get back from our outings, the property is the perfect setting allowing us to spend the rest of the day exploring the peaceful pond and its outlets by kayak or canoe. And, for those days where our morning activities prove to be too much, Twin Pines has a great setup with its screened in gazebo and dock that allow us to find the perfect escape to play a game, read a book, or relax. As for the house itself, the setup with its open family room, fully stocked kitchen, and relaxing master bedroom and bath, as well as two more bedrooms for the kids with a separate bathroom, is the perfect layout. The house has always been immaculately clean when we arrive and we can see small touches throughout the house and around the property that definitely point to the the owners attention to detail. Weve also enjoyed nights hanging out in the loft watching movies on the tv with Netflix. As our kids have gotten older, weve appreciated the huge, nicely finished room above the detached garage, that is great for them to get away and have their own space, or to bring us all together for games and ping pong tournaments. We really cant say enough great things about Twin Pines, and we definitely look forward to returning. ”

“My wife and I are fortunate to have found Twin Pines and been able to invite our family and friends to join us twenty times since 2002. To us, Twin Pines is more than just a vacation rental; we fell in love with it on our first visit and continue to have this love affair 20 years later. We presently rent Twin Pines for two weeks every fall and hope to do so for years to come as long as the owners will let us. Upon arrival, you immediately feel the warmth and coziness of Twin Pines. The large stone fireplace is all prepared for a fire just awaiting a match. The stone fireplace in the master bedroom, likewise, is all set for a fire to be started. Unfortunately, my wife and I are normally just too tired to enjoy it. The en suite bathroom has both a wonderful shower and a jetted bathtub. There is a balcony with a TV, but we try to never turn it on during our stay. You see the immaculate care of Twin Pines everywhere. We have seen all the improvements the owners have made through the years. There is a large screened-in gazebo to be enjoyed, and a garage with a game and reading room above it. Now if it only had a pool table. The dock at the bottom of the steps is one of our favorites. It is the place for wine and appetizers every evening at 5:00, watching and listening for loons. Our son-in-law fishes from the dock catching a good sized small mouth bass this year. On a clear night, we take a trip down the steps to the dock to look up at the billions of stars. I take my annual fall swim in Osgood when, let us say, the water has a certain chill. Our family and guest put the kayaks and canoe to constant use. My wife loves the paddle over to Church Pond. Osgood Pond is very tranquil, but you are also very close to the St. Regis canoe area and other canoeing spots as well. I could rapture on about Twin Pines but everyone should get the idea that it is a great place to stay. Twin Pines has everything down to the most mundane like soap for the washer. If a problem does occur, the caretaker is only a phone call away and the problem will be taken care of immediately. Anyone thinking about renting Twin Pines should not hesitate but act immediately; they will not be disappointed.”

“Our return visit to Twin Pines reminded us why we like this place so much. The location is quiet and uncrowded enabling a more intimate experience of the pond, woods, and wildlife. Osgood Pond is a gem: clean, free of large noisy boats, motels, and retail businesses. Paddling Osgood Pond, the canals and smaller ponds, and the Osgood River is a scenic joy accessible from the property's dock. Beautiful hiking opportunities are a few minutes drive away. (Paul Smiths Visitor Interpretive Center, Black Pond, and St. Regis mountain are favorites nearby.) The camp itself is very clean, well-maintained, very comfortable, and richly appointed with Adirondack-style furniture, photographs, paintings, and crafts (and even a bear!). A generous collection of books is available so you can curl up in front of a fire with a guide book and plan your next hike, paddle, or just be inspired by the photo books. The well-equipped kitchen makes meal prep a breeze--good thing because restaurants are a bit of a drive away. We can't think of anything lacking at the property--apparently many others agree because you need to book well in advance to get your favored dates. We're fortunate owners are willing to share their beautiful camp plus they're very organized and pleasant to deal with.”

“We have stayed at this gem of a house three times, and hope to keep coming back. The location is great: there are lots of great hikes nearby (Paul Smiths VIC as well as other peaks) and the paddling on Osgood Pond can't be beat. The house is also convenient to the village of Saranac Lake for shopping, and it's close enough to other attractions in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake. The house itself is comfy and nicely decorated. The kitchen is very well equipped. We enjoyed the large, private, wooded lot. If there is any downside at all, it would be the 40+ steps down to the dock. It wasn't as issue for us but those with a disability might have a problem. We have rented many houses in the area over the years and this is our favorite. ”

“We had another wonderful week long stay at Twin Pines (our 2nd stay). This home does not feel like a rental; it feels like home while you are there. The home is very clean and well maintained. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking and provided plenty of storage for our food items so we could keep the counters uncluttered. The 'mud room' is a terrific bonus with it cupboards to hang coats, tuck away back packs, hiking boots, etc. Having wood provided for the fireplace is a much appreciated touch. We enjoyed the deck, the gazebo (a favorite spot to relax and read) and my husband fished off the dock. The property location is great for hikers of every level, with plenty of hiking close by or a fairly short car ride away. Saranac Lake and Lake Placid are a short drive for groceries, restaurants, etc. Being out in nature whether on a hike or at this home is relaxing and rejuvenating. We've seen deer and turkey stroll through the property and listen to the loons (a favorite of mine). Some of our favorites hikes are Henry's Woods, Cobble Ledge and the VIC trails. There are even trails right off the road the property is located on. The owners have been great to work with. We look forward to another future stay at Twin Pines.”

“My wife and I recently spent a long weekend at Twin Pines. This was our first time renting this wonderful Adirondack log home. We can't even begin to express how delighted we were with the property, the location on Osgood Pond, and the amenities that the owners provide. Considering it was early November, and each night there was a hard frost, the home was warm and inviting, and we took advantage of every aspect of the property. The owners left no detail unattended. Both the bedroom and living room fireplaces were pre-set with kindling, newspaper, and logs....so when we arrived we just had to light the fire. The kitchen is complete with modern appliances and everything you need. The pictures do not do justice to the beautiful location. Osgood Pond is so peaceful and serene and we bundled up with hot toddy's and spent time sitting in ADK chairs on the dock. The Red Dot hiking trailhead is just down the road from Twin Pines (you can walk to the trailhead), and there are plenty of other trails to choose from nearby. (don't forget to buy Paul Smith's maple syrup at their shed in the woods just up the White Pine Road). We hope to return again soon. ”

“We have been coming back to Twin Pines every year now since 2011, and many years we have spent a week at Twin Pines in both the Fall and Summer season. It is without question one of the nicest cottages we have been privileged to stay in since our first trip to the Adirondacks back in 2001. It now feels like a home away from home for us and we absolutely love it. The location is very quiet and off the main road, but a short drive to the town of Saranac Lake, and also with easy access to the canoe wilderness area. We are avid canoeists and the paddle up the Osgood river has become one of our favorite paddles. We feel so fortunate to have found such a beautiful cottage to spend time in the Adirondacks with family and friends, and the owners could not be more gracious.”

“We have once again have had a lovely fall vacation at Twin Pines - our first since COVID. It is truly a little slice of heaven for us and we think this may have been our 11th visit. It's beautiful remote location on Osgood Pond with easy access to the VIC for hiking is unmatched and its equally easy access to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid make for a great way to blend outdoor activities with "in town" activities. It's also easy access to other of the many wonderful places and activities throughout the park for day trips. The house, the gazebo, the garage with its game room overhead, and the dock offer every amenity for all age groups including the very best fire place - something we always take full advantage of, including when we had a truly "snow globe" November vacation in 2019. It's so easy to just relax in and enjoy. And the owners have been amazing and gracious hosts in all the years we have been coming. A very big thanks to them for sharing Twin Pines with us!!! ”

“We love staying at this cabin on Osgood Pond. We have been bringing our family for 5-6 years now. Each year the homeowner has made significant and enjoyable improvements to the property that makes our stay even more fun. We are road cyclers and have a favorite route in the area that can't be beat. We are kayakers and enjoy the variety of opportunities Osgood Pond provides. Mostly we love sitting on the deck in the peace and quiet. We recommend this stay without any doubt!”

“Clear Pond is a special place, the property was beautiful and very well-maintained and the owners were a pleasure to deal with. We want to go back! When we arrived after a long drive, we were so pleasantly surprised with the house and surrounding property. This home is a real cut-above as it was very tastefully furnished and had been recently renovated with a new kitchen. Everything in the house worked and was very clean, which is rare for a rental. We had large kayaks to launch and rather than carry-down those steps to the water, we simply made a short trip down the road to the boat launch and paddled-back to the house's dock. The area surrounding the dock is very natural and the view across the lake to the mountains was first-rate and the favorite place to be for sunsets. The wireless internet was really nice for checking the weather and pretending to be interested in your work e-mails. The game room above the garage was like a nice bonus: the simple joys ping-pong were rediscovered. This room was much larger than it appeared in the photos. The owners were very straightforward to work with: We received a quick and professional reply to each of our correspondences. Such attention to detail is rare and we really do appreciate it. - thank you! ”

“I am not sure how to express, how much we love spending time at Twin Pines. We have been renting in several areas of the Adirondacks for many years. We first came across Twin Pines a few years ago and it immediately became our favorite rental. The house is beautifully decorated, clean, and comfortable. The owners have thought of every convenience to make you feel at home ( and are a true pleasure to work with). From sitting in front of the fireplace to relaxing at the dock we feel at total peace. We love the ability to fish, kayak, play ping pong, walk the nearby nature trails, or to just sit and read. We have enjoyed Twin Pines in sun, rain, and snow. Each visit gives us a new wonderful memory. We are counting down the days to our return visit!”

“Twin Pines on Osgood Pond will exceed any expectations you have about renting a log home on-line. We love the serenity of winter in the Adirondacks and this home will make you want to return every year with your family. It is comfortable, gorgeously decorated and has everything you need to just come and relax. Osgood Pond is beautiful when it is frozen. The property is perfectly set above the 'pond' for a stunning view. The cost is fair with the up-to-date home and surrounding property that is included. It is very clean and you will love every room. Marked hiking trails are conveniently close by, sledding is easy to do at the college or at Mt. Pisgah. Lake Placid is an easy drive to check out the olympic site or tour the town. You will not regret renting here!!! ”

“This log home is wonderful for so many reasons. It is warm, inviting and completely equipped for an easy comfortable stay. We rented this property for a long weekend. The new kitchen was just being completed, and is lovely and equipped for cooking any meal, if you would like to do so. The furnishings are true Adirondack-style. Wonderful and cozy sitting area in front of the fireplace. Large windows looking out to Osgood Pond . . one of the best lakes for canoeing we have ever experienced. We have rented for many years at different locations in the Adirondacks, and this cabin is one of our favorites. I hope we have an opportunity to stay there again.”
